A burst pipe can do a lot of damage in a short time. What you do in the first ten minutes makes a big difference.
1. Turn off the water
Find your main stopcock and turn it off. In most homes it's near the water meter at the front boundary, or where the water pipe enters the house. It's worth finding it now, before you need it.
2. Turn off the power if water is near electrics
If water is near power points, appliances or the switchboard, switch off the power at the switchboard, but only if you can do it safely without standing in water.
3. Open your taps
Once the water is off, open the cold taps to drain the remaining water from the pipes and relieve pressure.
4. Protect your belongings
Move furniture, rugs and valuables out of the way, and use towels and buckets to contain the water.
5. Take photos
Photograph the damage for your insurer before you start cleaning up.
6. Call a plumber
We're available 24/7 with same-day response across Canberra, Queanbeyan and the Capital Region. We'll talk you through isolating the problem over the phone, then get a plumber to you fast. There's no emergency call-out fee, and you'll have a fixed price before we start.
