Rainwater tanks: sizing a tank for your household

A simple guide to working out how much storage your home, garden or stock really needs.

A rainwater tank is a smart investment for any regional property. The trick is getting the size right. Too small and you'll run dry; too big and you've spent more than you need to.

Start with how you'll use it

Will the tank supply the whole house, or just the garden, toilets and laundry? Is it for stock, firefighting or a backup supply? Each use changes how much water you need to store.

Work out your roof catchment

As a rough guide, every square metre of roof collects about one litre of water for every millimetre of rain. Your roof area and your local rainfall set the limit on how much you can collect.

Think about dry spells

The tank needs to carry you through the drier months, not just the average. If you're relying on it for drinking water, size for a long dry stretch.

Other things to consider

  • Space on your block and access for installation.
  • Pumps, filters and connections to your house plumbing.
  • Keeping water cool, clean and algae-free.
  • How the tank fits with an on-site wastewater system.
