Septic systems don't last forever. Most give years of trouble-free service, but when one starts to fail it can become a health risk for your family and a problem for the environment. Here are five signs it's time to think about an upgrade.
1. Bad smells around the tank or yard
A healthy system shouldn't smell. Persistent sewage odours near the tank, trenches or drains usually mean waste isn't being treated properly.
2. Soggy ground or unusually green grass
Wet patches, pooling water or a lush strip of grass over your absorption trenches can mean effluent is surfacing instead of soaking away.
3. Slow drains and gurgling toilets
If several fixtures are slow at once, the problem is often in the tank or trenches rather than a single blocked pipe.
4. Frequent pump-outs
Needing the tank pumped out far more often than you used to is a sign the system can no longer keep up with your household.
5. Your household or property has changed
More people, a new extension or a granny flat can push an older system beyond what it was designed for.
What an upgrade involves
We'll assess your existing system, then design and install a modern treatment system to suit your site and soil. We decommission the old tank, manage council approval and handle the installation with our own team. Most installs take just one to two days on site, and every new system comes with a 12-month service agreement.
